What are the steps of replacing a roof?

Oct 7

It is a huge decision to replace your roof. But it must be done. Roof leaks can be caused by worn, old, or brittle shingles. If roofing goes beyond its warranty, it puts you at greater risk for a storm.

Rely on local, reputable Mississauga roofers. Take control of your roof replacement. You must understand the entire process from start to finish for the best results. It is essential to understand the process to make informed decisions fully. These are the seven steps every roofing company should take to replace your roof.

1. The Pre-planning Stage

Smart pre-planning is key to a successful construction project. Pro contractors will measure your roof to determine the material you need. They also consider the shape and contours of your roof to give you an idea of the difficulty level and best approach. These factors will allow them to provide you with a competitive, free quote with no obligations and give you an estimate. If you accept, it should also give you a firm start date.

2. Preparing for the Job Site

The next step is to prepare the site. This involves bringing in a dumpster for the old shingles and other debris and laying down tarps where necessary to protect your siding and windows. The roofing material, ladders, roof jacks and other equipment will also be brought to the site.

3. Remove the Old Roofing

Never put new roofing shingles on top of old ones. This would make it difficult for the new shingles to lay correctly, reduce their lifespan, and weaken. All old shingles, roofing nails, and flashing must be removed.

4. Roof Deck Inspection

The roof deck should be thoroughly cleaned up and inspected. It must be replaced if it is found to have rotten or severely weakened wood. It will also need to be re-nailed if there are missing nails or decking that bounces rather than being laid flat and solid.

5. How to Prepare the Deck

Next, inspect the deck and prepare it for the shingles. This involves laying drip edges along the roof deck, flashing around chimneys, vents, or in roof valleys, and then applying heavy-duty roofing felt (underlayment). To prevent leaks, there will be places where roofing caulk and tar should be used (around chimneys).

6. Installation of the New Roofing

Your contractors will install new shingles by starting at the roof's bottom. Special caps will be needed at the peak, and hip rises. Shingles must also be cut carefully in the valleys and around dormers.

7. Cleanup and Final Inspection

The job is not complete until all the waste has been removed. It is up to the contractor to dispose of all waste and not for homeowners to put it in their trash cans. You can use rolling, wheeled magnets to search the perimeter for loose nails. The final step is to inspect the work and site.
